When you should quit your job?

Finding work in today’s difficult economy is an uphill battle. Many workers are forced to stay at their current jobs because they cannot afford to risk unemployment, knowing that it may be months or years before they can find work.

Even so, there are times when even the risks associated with being unemployed are not enough to dissuade you from quitting your job. Here are some warning signs that your job may not be worth keeping.

5 Warning Signs it’s Time to Quit a Job

• When Going to Work Makes You Ill

I remember a time I worked for a survey research company. Every day I would receive emails – sometimes with expletives – about mistakes I made that were actually made by someone else. Each time they would apologize, only to do it again the next day. The act of going into work was making me ill to the point where I’d spend my lunch breaks in the bathroom. It was time to quit.

• When Nothing You Do is Right

During high school I worked for a grocery store that kept a list of all of the assignments we completed during the day. My name showed up more than any other clerks’, because I was trying to make a good impression and was working extra hard to do it. Yet every day I was told that I wasn’t working as hard as worker A or B (even though they had completed fewer tasks than I had). When it was clear that management had made up their mind about me to the point of ignoring evidence to the contrary, it was time to quit.

• When You’re Frightened of Other Staff

Not every workplace is a friendly workplace. Occasionally you’ll find that your coworkers or managers are legitimately frightening people, either because they say or do inappropriate things or act in a way that makes you physically uncomfortable. No one should have to be afraid for their own safety in the workplace. If that occurs, it’s time to quit.

• When the Stress Pours Into Other Parts of Your Life

Being stressed at work is normal. Being so stress that you take it out on your friends or loved ones is not. At some point you need to ask yourself if work is more important than your happiness and the love of those around you. Here’s a hint: The answer is always no. The point of working is to live a good life outside of work. If that’s not happening, your workplace may not be right for you.

• When You Are Unhappy

You don’t always have to wait for things to go terribly wrong at a company before you leave. Sometimes the best reason to leave is simple: you’re not happy. Maybe it’s your workload. Maybe it’s your relationship with your coworkers. Maybe it’s the hours you spend at work or the potential for growth within the company. If you’re unhappy – and you can afford to risk unemployment – leaving your job may be the right choice for you.

Sometimes It’s Just Time to Say “I Quit”

We’re a society that puts a lot of value on money. But money should never take priority over happiness. If you’ve got considerable problems at your job, including persistent stress, poor relationships, and a level of unhappiness that never seems to go away, it may be time to quit your job and start looking for work elsewhere.
